Consumer demand for toys continues to grow every year. New innovations or latest cartoon character that hit the box office would surely be a craze come December. However, the controversy on the lead-contaminated toys from China has sparked a consumer scare that dampened the toy industry. Toy companies and retail stores were greatly affected as consumer demand for toys declined.
This issue however gave hope to another player in the toy business. The loss of plastic toy manufacturers brought about by the “leaded toys” was business gain for cottage industries manufacturing wood crafts. Cottage industries producing handicrafts including wooden toys gained positive business outlook during this time. Apart from the usual ABC blocks, wood craft enterprises diversified their products. They also started producing plastic-made toys or metal-formed toys of popular cartoon characters in wood form.
