Playing with toys is an important part of childhood. Every year, thousands of new toys for kids hit the market but not all are actually recommended for children. Toys are supposed to be fun but many kids are brought to hospitals due to toy-related injuries.

Aside from supervising your kids during play, keep these general guidelines in mind when you shop for toys:

~ Plush toys should be washable
~ Painted toys must be covered in lead-free paint
~ Art materials should indicate non-toxic ingredients
~ Toys made of fabric must be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant
~ Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package which means they have undergone evaluation by the American Society for Testing and Materials
